Abstract
The Internal Quality Assurance Systems of Higher Education Institutions have become the tools through which these institutions respond to the quality requirements established by the government bodies of each country and from the international order. In addition, they contribute to meeting the needs established by stake holders. To systematize knowledge regarding the scope, types and structures of the Internal Quality Assurance Systems, a descriptive and documentary research was carried out, evaluating articles and other published documents. As a result, it was determined that the Internal Quality Assurance Systems in higher education institutions are based on the process approach, directing these to comply with continuous improvement cycles such as plan-do-check-act. In addition, the structure also covers subsystems, within which information systems stand out as fundamental. The research shows a need to structure models that allow measuring the maturity levels of the Internal Quality Assurance Systems and how the processes respond to each of the relevant stake holders.
